A History Spanning More than Seven Decades
The history of gear manufacturing as it applies to Riley Gear Corporation began in 1946 when our company was founded in Buffalo, New York. Since then, we have cultivated relationships with original equipment manufacturers around the world, providing them with high-quality precision gears for a wide variety of applications ranging from aerospace to off-road vehicles. Throughout our history, our employees and management teams have focused on providing great products to our customers and providing the highest level of customer service possible.
History of Riley Gear Corporation
1946 – Riley Gear Corporation was founded in Buffalo, New York, by Walter Riley and his son, Donald. The company was founded to provide customers with high-quality engineered small precision gear solutions for applications requiring gear components to withstand the harshest environments.
1951 – After five years of continuous growth, Riley Gear Corporation made the strategic decision to relocate its headquarters to a new facility in North Tonawanda, New York. This relocation would provide the company with the capacity for future growth. Riley Gear Corporation has invested in several additions and renovations to the North Tonawanda facility since 1951.
1968 – Original founder Walter Riley passed away.
1972 – Riley Gear Corporation shifted its focus from small precision gears to larger precision ground gears for major industrial manufacturers of multiple industrial applications including aerospace and defense, energy, industrial HVAC, and transportation.
1974 – Riley Gear Corporation was chosen by NASA as the gear supplier on the Viking 1 Landing Vehicle which was utilized for exploration on Mars from 1975 to 1980.
1981 – Riley Gear Corporation was acquired by the current shareholders and Tom Lowry was named President. The company began converting its machining equipment to computer numerically controlled equipment; thereby expanding its manufacturing expertise.
1988 – Riley Gear Corporation expanded its manufacturing footprint by opening a second facility in St. Augustine, Florida. This facility would enhance the company’s manufacturing capability and provide additional capacity for growth.
1989 – St. Augustine, Florida, became the corporate headquarters for Riley Gear Corporation.
1998 – The St. Augustine, Florida, facility earned TS16949 automotive and ISO9001 non-automotive certifications.
2005 – The St. Augustine, Florida, facility earned its ISO14001 environmental certification.
2007 – The North Tonawanda, New York, facility earned its ISO9001 non-automotive and AS9100 aerospace certifications.
2010 – The St. Augustine, Florida, facility earned its AS9100 aerospace certification.
2015 – Tom Lowry, President of Riley Gear Corporation for 34 years, passed away.
2015 – The board promoted Mike Menz from Executive Vice President to President.
2016 – Riley Gear Corporation is celebrating 70 years of gear manufacturing!
